Hansel and Gretel

For my theatre class, my professor had the class watch the play Hansel and Gretel. I didn’t think at first to do my blog post on it, but after seeing it I realized that it would be perfect to write about and relate to gender. One scene that stuck out at me about gender is after Hansel and Gretel left the house, the mother was left alone. She stated how upset her husband is going to be that she had not prepared any dinner for him upon his arrival home. I thought about this as back in the earlier 1900’s when women stayed home and cooked while the men went out to work. But after the husband came home, he brought back tons of food for the family to eat. After presenting the tasty gifts to his wife, she did later question why she was so upset because the man of the house is supposed to go out and make money/bring home the food for the family.
