Dahmer - Extra Credit

While watching a film that involves progression on my research paper, it wasn't so much the plot or scenes of the movie that were related to gender, it was some statistics. I watched the film Dahmer. This movie is a horror film based off of a true story where a serial killer kills about 30 men and eats their bodies. The one thing that caught me about gender is when some statistics were being said and one was that out of the crimes today, over 75% of them are men. The narrator later said that mainly men are the cause for crime today. As bad as that sounds its most likely to be true.

Locked Up - Extra Credit

For this week’s blog, I decided to do the show Locked Up.  It’s a show where a camera crew goes to a real prison or correction facility, and films inmates and basically everything that goes on in the prison.  At one point of the show it was comparing all male prisons to all female prisons, and including the amount of each gender in prisons that have both male and females.  In the statistics that were stated, there is almost double the amount of prisons for males than there are for females.  Without assuming, a correctional officer blatantly said that men are the main cause for crime in the world over women because of the much higher number of men in prison than women.  People can say that, that statement was sexist, but by the statistics it seems to be true.

Who is the more convincing woman?

This week I am going to my blog on an episode from the Canadian series Kenny Vs. Spenny.  For those people who have never seen the show before, it is about two best friends who battle and do stupid competitions to see who is better hint the title Kenny Vs. Spenny.  The catch is the loser of the competition has to do a humiliation, which basically is whatever the winner says to do.  In one of the weeks they did a competition on who is the more convincing woman.  I feel even though I thought this episode is very funny, I also felt that it was degrading to women.  Spenny along with his personality is very truthful and doesn’t cheat nor talks bad about Kenny or the women gender.  But Kenny on the other hand will do everything in his power to win, even if it’s cheating, lying, stealing, and faking.  The jokes he makes toward the women are inappropriate but also comedic at the same time.  A less degrading example would be, when the woman was helping Kenny dress up she asked, “are you ready for your breast yet?”  Kenny’s response was I’ve been ready for yours for about 30 minutes now.  This episode hits a lot of feminine points and shows how people should not be toward women.

Im sure everybody has seen or heard of the currently fifth season running show Lost.  Besides this being my favorite show to ever be produced, i am going to write my blog on it.  I was just surfing my saved TiVo shows and came across the episode The White Rabbit from the first season.  In this episode Jack, Hurly, and Charlie find out that Kate is a run away fugitive.  As news to them and also the fans, everyone is surprised.  Kate's first impression was the nice country girl who is always there to help out.  Why it was such a big surprise is because Kate's character is a very feminine girl and nobody would suspect her to be a criminal.

Anchorwoman

Just sitting around the dorm, me and my buddies began to watch the movie Anchorman. Even with Will Farrell as one of my favorite actors, he plays a part in the movie as an anchorman for the new, which he thinks hes much more than he is. About half way through the movie, and when their news team is number one. The producer brings in another anchorman, or "anchorwoman". With her havin the same job as the all famous Ron Burgandy played by Will Farrell, he thinks that it is not right that she has that job. Throughout the movie he constantly repeats that it is called anchorman not anchorwoman. He actually thinks less of her because she is a woman doing a "mans" job. In the end, his ignorance back fires leaving him jobless and her as head anchor.

Borat

While watching the very inappropriate movie Borat, all i could think of is that in terms of gender, how easy a blog post would be on this movie. Throughout the whole movie, the main character Borat makes many jokes about women and how they are not as good as men. One example when he was in his country at the time, he would consider every one of the women there Gypsies. Depending on your sense of humor, some people might find this very disrespectful. Even when he gets to America he constantly runs around thinking that the women here are just sex objects. But the people in the movie and most likely the audience feels that he is wrong because man or woman you are equal.

Sex Drive

While just looking for a good comedy to watch, I stumbled across the movie Sex Drive. This movie is about a young adult meets a girl online that he would like to have sex with. He then decideds to go on a road trip to meet up with this woman. While on this journey he came across many obstacles. The number one thing I could relate to gender about this film is that the reason this woman he met online was talking to him, is to steal his car. In order to lure him in to driving across the country for her, she had to offer him sex. Well it defiantly worked and she had a shot at that beautiful car.

This week I’m doing my blog on the newly released movie, Slumdog Millionaire. Since the movie takes place in India, the views on women are much different than here in the United States. Within the movie, many events can be related to a focus on gender. One particular scene is when some young girls are kidnapped and basically forced to be prostitutes towards men. Along with the main actor following the script I as well thought that this was a horrible way to portray women. It was upsetting to think that things like this might actually be going on in countries like India.

Hansel and Gretel

For my theatre class, my professor had the class watch the play Hansel and Gretel. I didn’t think at first to do my blog post on it, but after seeing it I realized that it would be perfect to write about and relate to gender. One scene that stuck out at me about gender is after Hansel and Gretel left the house, the mother was left alone. She stated how upset her husband is going to be that she had not prepared any dinner for him upon his arrival home. I thought about this as back in the earlier 1900’s when women stayed home and cooked while the men went out to work. But after the husband came home, he brought back tons of food for the family to eat. After presenting the tasty gifts to his wife, she did later question why she was so upset because the man of the house is supposed to go out and make money/bring home the food for the family.

Scrubs

Now finally getting enough time to watch some tv and do my first blog post. I decided to turn on the television and do the write about the first show I saw. The show Scrubs was on Comedy Central and is not a television show I watch constantly so I was actually interested in finally trying to watch a new show, and then relate it to gender. The plot was about an intern by the name of D.J. and Elliot taking over the label of new couple at the work place. They were the typical new couple always all over each other at every second they could be. If I were to relate this episode to gender I would mention that when D.J. and Elliot got in their first fight as a couple, that Elliot said to D.J “All guys are the same.” Me hearing this would interpret it as that Elliot thinks that all men in a relationship can be mean and are out to hurt the women in the relationship. I disagreed with this because you can’t really put all men under that title because all men are not the same.
